Badger3 System: Derived Data
The Derived Data Engine is an important new module in the Badger System. It allows the local system administrator to define a completely independent data set for each patient made up of items that are derived from existing items.
For each new item, a Badger Script can be written that calculates its value in real-time. Within the script, the administrator can query any of the patients other data items and include subtle logic to determine the exact value. This script is executed in real-time when specific "normal" data items are entered or edited by users. As a result, the derived data items are always up to date and can therefore be used in any of the patient reports as needed.
An example of a derived data item is "Number of level one intensive care days". This would be derived by checking a series of single patient notes records regarding ventilation and care level etc. to determine the correct figure.
Creating derived data items is essential for creating data sets for exporting to other projects. For example, the Badger System, could maintain separate database tables contained derived national audit data items which is ready at any time for exporting and analysis.
